Anthropocene is a major exhibition that tells the story of our human impact on the planet through photographs, films and immersive experiential technologies. Co-presented by the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the National Gallery of Canada, and co-produced with Fondazione MAST, Bologna, Italy, the exhibition is a component of The Anthropocene Project by photographer Edward Burtynsky and filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier. In addition to being showcased in Canada, the exhibition toured Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Argentina from 2020 to 2023.
The Taiwan leg of the tour marks the first inclusion of local artists Chi Po-Lin, Yang Shun-Fa, Lucas K Doolan, and Lu Yu-Jui, who join in exploring the effects of the "Anthropocene" on the Earth, prompting a reevaluation of the relationship between human-altered landscapes, geological variations, and natural ecology.

The Koffler Gallery, in partnership with Swiss Architect Manuel Herz and Canadian historian and curator Robert Jan van Pelt, announce the world-premiere exhibition of The Synagogue at Babyn Yar: Turning the Nightmares of Evil into a shared Dream of Good. This international exhibition is brought together with assistance from Canadian architect Douglas Birkenshaw and through architectural photography by celebrated Dutch photographer Iwan Baan. The exhibition features large-scale photographic murals directed by Ukrainian-Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky taken by Ukrainian photographer Maxim Dondyuk.

Co-produced by Canadian music legend Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed) and set to a stirring original score by multi award-winning composer Phil Strong, the result is a deeply moving 22-minutes.
Premiering at Luminato Festival Toronto in June 2022, In the Wake of Progress now comes to Oxford Street’s Taylor Square, where passers-by and art pilgrims alike will experience this urgent call to action, and search for hope through art.

Witness the epic tale of humanity’s impact on the planet at Edward Burtynsky’s new indoor immersive experience, In the Wake of Progress. This fully choreographed blend of photographs and film from world-renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky surrounds you with a powerful 30-minute experience of global landscapes, revealing primordial beauty alongside the stark impact of human industry.
This intimate and enveloping project is complemented by a curated gallery show of traditional Burtynsky photographs and high-resolution murals including new and never-before-seen work, a Change Station which tackles the question “what can I do now?”, and two powerful augmented reality (AR) experiences which explore the impact and legacy of the internal combustion engine.
In the face of the climate crisis, In the Wake of Progress dares us to have an important conversation about the legacy of the widespread impact of human industry and what it means for the future of sustainable life on this planet.

On October 16, 2021, Luminato Festival Toronto will unveil Edward Burtynsky’s In the Wake of Progress – a fully choreographed blend of photographs and film, including new and never-before-seen works, by world-renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. Created for the screens surrounding Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, and filmed by Bokeh Collective for the 2021 Festival’s online audience, the piece tells the epic tale of humanity’s impact on the planet through photographs and film from Burtynsky’s 40-year career.
This new 22-minute piece, co-produced by Canadian music legend Bob Ezrin, presents the powerful imagery of global landscapes devastated by human activity in contrast to the dazzling urban centre, at a moment when the health of our planet is an urgent international priority. Edward Burtynsky’s In the Wake of Progress includes an original soundtrack by composer and sound designer Phil Strong, featuring award-winning musical artist iskwē, as well as musicians of The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music, co-orchestrated and conducted by Claudio Vena.

This August, Brita® Canada will be unveiling an immersive outdoor exhibit at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works on the impact of single-use plastic bottles in waterways and featuring six thought-provoking photographs of pristine waterways from photographer Edward Burtynsky.
The unique 5-day exhibit includes an unforgettable Augmented Reality installation, developed by AVARA Media, visualizing the number of plastic bottles that end up in landfills and waterways, a choice that can be offset by using Brita® filters which can replace up to 1,800 single-use plastic water bottles (standard 500mL single-use plastic bottles) each year.
Social distancing and Stage 3 COVID-19 protocols will be in effect.

Next fall, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the Canadian Photography Institute (CPI) of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) will co-present Anthropocene, a major new contemporary art exhibition that tells the story of human impact on the Earth through film, photography, and new experiential technologies. Co-produced with MAST Foundation, Bologna, Italy, the exhibition is a component of the multi-disciplinary Anthropocene Project from the collective of photographer Edward Burtynsky and filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier. Organized by the artists in partnership with the three organizations, Anthropocene will run at the AGO and NGC simultaneously from September 2018 through early 2019.
