This project brings together the work of seven years, presenting the latest installment in Burtynsky’s ongoing œuvre.

In October 2014, Edward Burtynsky embarked on a photographic journey that took him 4,000 kilometres across Eastern Europe to capture current landscapes of “scarred” sites of the Holocaust. This journey resulted in over 250 photographic images. Burtynsky in collaboration with a team assembled by Lord Cultural Resources that includes Gail Lord, architect Daniel Libeskind, Holocaust scholar Doris Bergen, and landscape architect Claude Cormier, selected six photographs to comprise large-scale imagery for the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, Canada. 

All the photographs are of the sites as they appear in their 21st-century setting – and this underlines the theme of “legacy”. The legacy of the Holocaust is to understand what happened, and to remember especially when the “markers” have, or are being, eradicated by human and natural processes. 

To provide a more complete context for this imagery, and for the selection of the portfolio, this book presents a broader sampling of key images from that expedition.

Consisting of 31 aerial photos of the salt pans in the Little Rann of Kutch, India, the project is the result of months of intricate negotiations and preparations. These striking geometric images, taken in an intense ten-day period during which Burtynsky photographed from a helicopter, present the pans, wells and vehicle tracks as abstract, painterly patterns: subtly colored rectangles crossed by grids of gestural lines. And yet the reality behind the ironic beauty of Burtynsky’s pictures is a harsh one. Each year 100,000 poorly paid Agariya workers toil in the pans, extracting over a million tons of salt from the floodwaters of the nearby Arabian Sea. Furthermore, receding groundwater levels, combined with debt, diminishing market values as well as a lack of governmental support, threaten the future of this 400-year-old tradition and the lives dependent on it.

"The images in this book are not about the battles being fought on the ground”, Burtynsky writes. "Rather, they examine this ancient method of providing one of the most basic elements of our diet; as primitive industry and as abstract two-dimensional human marks upon the landscape."

It occurred to me that the vast, human-altered landscapes that I pursued and photographed for over 20 years were only made possible by the discovery of oil and the mechanical advantage of the internal combustion engine. The Pentimento project is a suite of black and white prints produced from unintentionally distressed Type 55 Polaroid negatives originally made as test-shots in the Chittagong Delta of Bangladesh, where Burtynsky photographed his celebrated Shipbreaking series. Replete with the blemishes and scars of the photographic process, the images have a raw and painterly appearance and an intimate appeal. Opening his archive to the viewer by realizing in print the intermediate stage of one of his most celebrated bodies of work, Burtynsky shines an unprecedented light on the evolution of his imagery. The result is a captivating body of work that describes the ghost image lying beneath the work’s surface:

It’s a word drawn from the scholarship of painting, and it describes when the artist has painted over a section of canvas, yet traces of the earlier image persist, reemerging over time. Since the inception of photography, the landscape has largely been a genre concerned with the contemplation of sublime nature. By the late twentieth century, however, the seismic effects wrought by industry demanded a new vision. For the last twenty years this has been the artistic concern of photographer Edward Burtynsky.

Burtynsky characterizes his theme as, "the landscape changed in the pursuit of progress". Working with a large-format view camera, Burtynsky has journeyed from the mines of Sudbury to the marble quarries of Italy. And what he found in the aftermath of the extraction of resources, the affluence of industry and the reclamation of materials was the "residual landscape", a poetic document embedded with metaphors for architecture, archeology and art.

Residual Landscapes presents a portfolio of twenty-four photographs accompanied by an interview conducted by Michael Torosian.

The text has been composed in Linotype Optima and Palatino and hand-printed letterpress on Hahnemühle Biblio paper. The brilliance of the original prints has been preserved in the sumptuous portfolio of four-colour stochastic reproductions, printed on Utopia Premium ivory paper, and varnished. The edition has been quarter-bound, by hand, in black Canapetta book cloth with burgundy Bugra paper over boards.
