The Latcham Gallery is thrilled to present The Amended Landscape, an exhibition of photographic works by Edward Burtynsky, Eve Gane, Marco Francisco, Shavon Madden and Moira Ness from July 6 to August 26
Edward Burtynsky is one of Canada's most respected photographers whose works can be found in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Since the 1980’s he has been creating epic photographs and more recently feature films, that reflect our human imprint upon the biosphere on which we depend. The scale and beauty of Burtynsky’s images depicting the environmental effects humanity has upon the landscape serve to disrupt the conventional reading of such destruction. Subversively pulling us into an intimacy with his subject, the work forces us to confront the reality of our impact upon the planet.
The Latcham Gallery has also included the lens-based work of four emerging artists who, through a variety of methods and approaches, seek to mirror the many ways we manipulate, augment, and otherwise leave our mark upon the landscape. Eve Gane brings a series of works that reflect our collective desire for upscale urban utopias that is cultivated by developers selling us affluent lifestyle fantasies. Marco Francisco will present a series of images depicting the material discards of manufacturing processes that, in turn, create topographies of their own. Shavon Madden presents a work made up of hundreds of close-up images of ash trees slated for destruction due to infestation of emerald ash borers that owes its success to our ever-warming winters. Moira Ness investigates the nocturnal urban landscape. Her images reflect a landscape at once familiar to us and also alien. Her night-light explorations are minimal and quietly disconcerting.
Together the imagery in The Amended Landscape asks us to reflect upon our relationship to the places where we live and on our relationship to the planet on which we depend. Edward Burtynsky’s photographic works can be found in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California. His distinctions include the TED Prize, the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts, The Outreach award at the Rencontres d’Arles, the Roloff Beny Book award, and the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. He sits on the board of directors for CONTACT: Toronto’s International Photography Festival, and The Ryerson Image Centre. In 2006 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada and currently holds six honorary doctorate degrees.
Eve Gane is a photo-based artist located in Toronto, Canada. She holds a BFA in Photography (2015) from OCAD University. Her work has been exhibited in many spaces including The Living Arts Centre, Yorkville Village Arts Festival and The Gladstone Hotel. She is the recipient of the Pandora Y.H. Ho Memorial Award for excellence of work and was also selected as an Untapped 2016 Emerging Artist.
Marco Francisco is a photographic traveler who explores and documents environment and culture through the medium of black and white analog film processes. He has presented his work in solo exhibitions in both Markham and Pickering. His work has been chosen for juried art exhibitions at The Latcham Gallery, Peel Art Gallery in Brampton and the AWOL Gallery Toronto. He is enrolled in the Photography Program in the Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University. Marco is currently working on a photographic project exploring the lifestyle and culture of spirit animals and animal personas.
Shavon Madden is a Brampton based artist, specializing in sculptural, performance and installation based work. She graduated from the University of Toronto Specializing in Art and Art History, along with studies in Environmental Science. She will commence work on her MFA at the University of Edenborough later this year. Madden has had works shown at Shelly Peterson Gallery at the University of Toronto, the Burlington Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Mississauga, among others.
Moira Ness is an emerging photo-based artist specializing in contemporary landscapes. She has exhibited at The Los Angeles Center For Digital Art, Red Head Galley, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and The CICA Museum. She was a finalist for RMG Exposed 2016, a finalist and overall winner for the 2017 UNTAPPED Emerging Artist Competition for The Artist Project and a finalist for SNAP! 2017 Photo Auction. Moira will be participating in the 2017 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and will be showing her work at NordArt in Büdelsdorf, Germany in the summer of 2017. She recently was the artist in residence at The 108 Residency in Upstate New York.
